OPEN CALL FÜR PROJEKTE UND INSTALLATIONEN ZU W.A. MOZART | MANNHEIMER SOMMER 2026

Vom 18. bis zum 28. Juni 2026 öffnet das Nationaltheater Mannheim seine Arme für eine Fülle an Kunstprojekten von Mozart bis Pop, von europäischer Aufklärung bis ferne Zukunft, von großer Oper bis Klanginstallation. Als produzierendes Festival suchen wir nach neuen Impulsen, um die Geschichte der Oper in eine noch unbekannte Zukunft fortzuschreiben.

Gesucht sind Konzeptionen für kleinere Musiktheater-Formate oder -installationen, die site-specific im Festivalmonat geprobt und aufgeführt werden sollen. Gewünscht ist eine Beschäftigung mit dem Motto des Festivals, das 2026 »Lasst euch entgrenzen!« lautet. Gemeint ist damit die poetische, wissenschaftliche oder politische Bedeutung von Grenzen und Rändern – in Bezug auf Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, der in Mannheim wichtige Impulse bekommen hat. Drei Produktionsteams erhalten die Möglichkeit, ihre Ideen mit einem Budget von jeweils 20.000 € (Sach- und Personalkosten, brutto) zu realisieren.

Die möglichen Aufführungsorte in Mannheim werden im Rahmen der zweiten Wettbewerbsrunde spezifiziert und besichtigt: Orte wie ein chinesisches Restaurant, ein kleiner Landschaftspark, eine Dampfeisenbahn, ein leerstehendes Bürogebäude oder eine Sportarena.

In Kooperation mit »O-Festival« in Rotterdam (vorher Operadagen) wird eine der drei Produktionen als Gastspiel zur Festivaledition 2027 eingeladen.

Bewerben können sich Musiktheater-Teams mit alternativer Arbeitsstruktur; mögliche Antragssprachen sind Deutsch und Englisch. Die Ausschreibung verläuft in zwei Stufen. Aus den Bewerbungen werden 9 Konzepte ausgewählt. Die ausgewählten Teams werden eingeladen, ihre Ideen vor einer Jury in Mannheim zu präsentieren und erläutern. Die Jury entscheidet anschließend, welche drei Produktionen im Rahmen des Festivals realisiert werden sollen.

From 18 to 28 June 2026, the Nationaltheater Mannheim will open its arms to a wealth of art projects from Mozart to pop, from the European Enlightenment to the distant future, from grand opera to sound installations. As a producing festival, we are looking for new impulses to continue the history of opera into an as yet unknown future.

We are looking for concepts for smaller music theatre formats or installations that are to be performed site-specifically during the festival month. We would like to see an engagement with the festival's motto, which in 2026 is ‘Let yourselves be unbounded!’. This refers to the poetic, scientific or political significance of borders and boundaries.
The starting point for your production should be the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who received important impulses in Mannheim. Three production teams will be given the opportunity to realise their ideas with a budget of €20,000 each (material and personnel costs, gross).

The possible performance locations in Mannheim will be specified and visited as part of the second round of the competition: Locations such as a Chinese restaurant, a small landscape park, a steam railway, a vacant office building or a sports arena.

A co-operation with the ‘O Festival’ (formerly Operadagen) in Rotterdam is planned. One of the productions will be invited to the ‘O Festival’-Edition of 2027.

Music theatre teams with an alternative working structure can apply; possible application languages are German and English. The call for applications is organised in two stages. Nine concepts will be selected from all applications. The selected teams will be invited to present and explain their ideas to a jury in Mannheim. The jury will then decide which three productions are to be realised as part of the festival.
