Seit über 20 Jahren hat sich IBT International Festivals Bristol als Heimat für bahnbrechende Live-Kunst und zeitgenössische Performance etabliert, indem es britische Künstler*innen unterstützt und führende internationale Künstler*innen ins Vereinigte Königreich einlädt. Als Reaktion auf die vielen globalen Herausforderungen hat sich IBT jedoch von seiner zweijährigen Festivalstruktur gelöst und leistet nun Pionierarbeit für neue Modelle einer nachhaltigen, inklusiven und international vernetzten Kulturproduktion. Der Vortrag verfolgt den Transformationsprozess von IBT von 2019 bis heute, um neu zu denken, wie Kunst gemacht, geteilt und erlebt wird – wie lokales Engagement gestärkt, Zugang und Diversität erhöht und schädliche Einflüsse auf die Umwelt minimiert werden können. Heute steht IBT für Innovation: als Leiterin der britischen Future Festivals Alliance und in Zusammenarbeit mit Partner*innen wie Perform Europe, dem Kulturnetzwerk IETM und dem British Council für die Entwicklung nachhaltiger internationaler Modelle. Das neue Programm »Don‘t Even Go There« ist Ausdruck eines radikalen Wandels. Ein Zehnjahresplan mit landesweit bedeutenden Auftragsarbeiten, gesellschaftlichem Engagement und Künstler*innenförderung ersetzt das frühere Modell des ehemals biennal stattfindenden Festivals durch einen nachhaltigeren, inklusiven und regenerativen Ansatz. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Communitites wird sichergestellt, dass Weltkultur nicht nur zugänglich ist, sondern auch von denen gestaltet wird, die sie erleben. Die Präsentation erläutert die Rolle von IBT bei der Gestaltung zukünftiger Kulturproduktion und gibt Einblicke in die Art und Weise, wie Kulturorganisationen systemische Veränderungen herbeiführen und gleichzeitig künstlerische Exzellenz, Inklusivität und Nachhaltigkeit gewährleisten können.

For over 20 years, IBT International Festivals established Bristol as a home for groundbreaking live art and contemporary performance, supporting UK artists and introducing leading international practitioners to the UK. However, in response to urgent global challenges, IBT has transitioned from its biennial festival, pioneering new models of sustainable, inclusive, and internationally connected cultural production. This session will explore IBT’s journey of transformation from 2019 to today to reimagine how art is created, shared, and experienced – deepening local engagement, increasing access and diversity, and reducing our environmental impact. Now, IBT is at the forefront of innovation, leading the UK’s Future Festivals Alliance and working with partners such as Perform Europe, IETM and the British Council to develop sustainable international models. Our new programme, ‘Don’t Even Go There’, marks a radical shift. This ten-year plan of nationally significant commissions, community engagement, and artist development replaces the biennial festival model with a more sustainable, inclusive, and regenerative approach. Co-created with communities, it ensures world-class culture is not only accessible but shaped by those who experience it. This presentation will share IBT’s evolving role in shaping the future of cultural production, offering insights into how arts organisations can lead systemic change while ensuring artistic excellence, inclusivity, and sustainability.
