»Il trovatore« ist eine Oper voll düsterromantischer Szenen. Zwei Brüder kämpfen unerkannt auf unterschiedlichen Seiten eines blutigen Bürgerkriegs. Als sich beide in Leonora verlieben, nimmt das Drama seinen Lauf. Der Scheiterhaufen, das Soldatenlager, der Raub Leonoras beim Eintritt ins Kloster: Verdis Fantasie entzündete sich an solchen Bildern derartig, dass eine der bezwingendsten Opern der Musikgeschichte entstand. In der Regie von Roger Vontobel erscheint Verdis Meisterwerk in einer imaginären Landschaft zwischen Feuer und Eis.
