Citizens supporting the theatre

With a starting fund from “Freunde und Förderer des Nationaltheaters” (Friends and Sponsors of the National Theatre), the “Foundation for the National Theatre in Mannheim” was initiated at the end of 2001. Within a relatively short timeframe this young foundation has received respectable donations from citizens and businesses from across the region.

The foundation has the primary mission to promote the National Theatre. As an independent foundation, under civil law, the aim is to support projects and activities that go beyond the borders of normal operations and highlight the national significance of the Mannheim National Theatre with financial and gifts in kind. One example is the "International Schiller-Days" which bring together great productions of plays written by this unique poet on our city’s stage every two years. In addition to project funding, the foundation also intends to promote the artistic talent of youth. The first scholarships were granted to young musicians in the 2004/2005 season. This is also an excellent opportunity for interested citizens who want to manifest their long-term solidarity with the National Theatre to make a contribution through donations.
Under the umbrella of the foundation, there is also the possibility for smaller sub-foundations or project-related foundations to be formed. These sub- or project-related foundations may have names related to that of the donor, depending on the extent of the donation. The donors participate in the theatrical life with particular intimacy and intensity. Donors are invited to major events of the theatre and have the opportunity to meet prominent artists. The names of the founders and donors are not only regularly mentioned in publications of the theatre but are also prominently displayed on the permanent plaques in the entrance of the house.

The Foundation of the National Theatre has the following purposes:
• The moral and financial support of projects and activities of the National Theatre that go beyond the normal operative play and that stress the international relevance of the Schiller stage.
• Measures the benefit of young artists.
