The Mannheim National Theatre is a legend in the history of theatre. Elector Carl Theodor of the Palatinate founded the traditional stage that has been playing without interruption since 1779. Schiller's revolutionary debut drama Die Räuber had its world premiere on this stage in 1782. Mozart continually visited the city; Carl Stamitz founded the "Mannheim School" of music. Our association “Freunde und Förderer des Nationaltheaters” ("friends and supporters of the National Theatre of Mannheim), that was founded after World War II, supports this great theatre with financial and ideational means. With more than 2000 members, this association is the largest cultural patron of Mannheim. The association's funds help finance large productions or important purchases of the theatre. The theatre lovers raise the funds for the theatre magazine that comes with the daily Mannheim newspaper every month and also for the maintenance of the Mannheim in-house writers. Young writers have the opportunity to gather their first experience in this function. With an initial funding of the association, the National Theatre Foundation was established to link the names of the donors permanently with the National Theatre.
Individual members pay an annual membership fee of 30 €, students 15 €, companies and institutions € 100. In return, the association offers its members first-hand information of theatrical events, reaching the circle of members by mail, by newsletter or via homepage. Our monthly meetings with the artists of the theatre have already achieved cult status in Mannheim. Beyond the material support, the Association Council strives for the understanding and support for the concerns of the theatre through contacts with political decision makers in the city and country. Within the Mannheim circle, "Young Economy" has emerged, which pays special attention to the theatre. At the University of Mannheim and other universities the club, NThusiasten, was founded, which comprises of many young friends of the National Theatre.
